A tailored diet is one of the fundamental elements in the treatment of various conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis. Specific nutritional components can impact the inflammatory process in the body - some products can contribute to the exacerbation of inflammation, while others may exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. The Mediterranean, vegetarian, and vegan diets are currently very popular. Can these diets be beneficial in preventing and reducing the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis - characteristics, symptoms and causative factors
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the joints of the hands and feet, but it can also impact other body areas. The most common symptoms are pain, stiffness, and swelling of the joints, which can result in their gradual destruction and severe disability if left untreated. Additionally, due to the progressive inflammatory process, damage to internal organs, such as lungs, heart, kidneys, and eyes, and even death may occur. Applying appropriate therapy can slow the progression of the disease, prevent complications, and enable normal functioning. The exact causes of RA are not yet fully understood. It is believed that the development of the disease is based on the combination of several factors, including genetic and environmental ones. The most important ones include genetic predisposition - higher risk in close relatives, overactive immune system - production of autoantibodies that attack body tissues, gender - women are approximately three times more likely to be affected than men, bacterial and viral infections - which trigger inflammatory responses, smoking - which increases risk and worsens symptoms, and stress - which can trigger the onset of the disease in some individuals.
