Many of us wish to rid ourselves of fat tissue, viewing it as harmful. However, this belief is only partially correct. Excess fat tissue is detrimental, often due to an unhealthy lifestyle. On the other hand, a certain amount of fat tissue is absolutely essential for proper body function. So what is the role of fat tissue besides energy storage?
Fat cell - Adipocyte, the basic structural unit of adipose tissue
Adipocytes, also referred to as fat cells, are the basic structural unit of adipose tissue responsible for energy storage. There are two main types of adipocytes: white and brown. White adipocytes are responsible for storing energy in the form of condensed fats, forming a tissue known as white adipose tissue. On the other hand, brown adipocytes are characterized by the presence of numerous mitochondria, which enables them to convert chemical energy into thermal energy. These cells are part of brown adipose tissue.
