One of the traditional culinary practices in Poland involves spreading bread with butter. It is hard to imagine freshly baked, warm bread without this butter. Nowadays, there are many discussions about the quality of bread, adding portions of vegetables to sandwiches or choosing lean spices, but the topic of butter for spreading on bread is often overlooked. Or maybe avocado? Butter? Which fat to choose for the bread spread? Margarine?
Which fats to select for spreading on bread – General guidelines
The selection of the type of fat for spreading on bread is an individual matter, depending on age, physical activity level, and health status. However, according to current nutritional recommendations, it is recommended to limit saturated fatty acids and replace them with single- and multi-unsaturated ones. In practice, this means that animal-derived fats, including butter, should always be converted into vegetable fats such as vegetable oils and margarine. Such measures can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and other diet-related diseases. Every year, experts in the fields of nutrition, obesity treatment, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases analyze available nutrition models. In January, they present the report of U.S. News & World Report, which takes into account the healthiest and most effective diets. In the overall ranking for 2022, the Mediterranean diet was ranked as the best diet, which is based on vegetables, fruits, dried legumes, fish and seafood, as well as the previously mentioned vegetable oils. The classic Mediterranean diet does not include spreads for bread, it usually dips the bread in olive oil.
