Beverages of plant origin, often mistakenly referred to as plant-based dairy products, are commodities whose popularity is steadily increasing year after year. There are numerous kinds of beverages available on the shelves, such as almond, soy, oat, and rice. They particularly garner the interest of vegetarians and vegans, but should beverages of plant origin be designated solely for those who opt for a plant-based diet?
Are vegetable drinks and vegetable milk equivalent products?
Vegetable drinks are frequently mistakenly referred to as vegetable milk, however this is not the correct term. The absence of a precise definition renders its use in trade unlawful according to European Union law. According to food legislation, milk is a product obtained from the milking of at least one cow and the term milk refers exclusively to cow's milk. In the case of milk originating from another animal, the species must be indicated in the name, e.g. goat milk, sheep milk. Other dairy products such as yogurts, kefir or buttermilk are separate products. In the US, the terms milk and drink are used interchangeably (D. Zaręba, M. Ziarno 2016).
