Apples are among the most popular fruits in Poland. They are cheap and available in almost every store, and stored for a long time to preserve their flavor and nutritional value. The average Pole eats up to a few kilograms of apples a year, and our country is one of the leading producers. The fruits are used for cakes, desserts, fruit and vegetable salads and as a meat additive. In addition, they are used to prepare various preparations: jams, mice, juices and compotes.
Apples and their Nutritional Value
Depending on the variety, apples can differ in color, shape, and size. However, an average fruit provides around 90 calories, substantial amounts of dietary fiber (mainly found in the skin) and antioxidant substances such as quercetin and polyphenols. Apples are also a source of many vitamins, including vitamin C, B vitamins, and beta-carotene, and contain some minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. However, it is important to note that most water-soluble vitamins are degraded after thermal processing. The amount of individual vitamins and minerals can vary depending on the apple variety, storage conditions, and ripeness. Apples also contain large amounts of simple sugars, but due to the fiber content, they do not cause a significant increase in blood sugar levels and have a low glycemic index. Therefore, people with insulin resistance or diabetes can consume them without concern. However, it is important to note that this rule does not apply to apple juice, which has a high glycemic index due to the removal of fiber. A better alternative is a cocktail made from blended apple, which can maintain a high fiber content.
