Abundance of fat tissue in the abdominal region is a disease that affects men more often than women. It is associated with an increase in the amount of fat in the abdominal area. Not only is it aesthetically problematic, but it can also lead to serious health complications. Is there a connection between nutrition and the occurrence of this disease? How can an abundance of fat in the abdominal region be treated? What are the reasons for its occurrence?
Central obesity: Definition, causes, and diagnostic approaches of the "apple" phenotype
Abdominal obesity—also referred to as visceral, central, or "apple-shaped" obesity—represents a significant and growing health concern, particularly in highly developed nations where its prevalence continues to climb. Research conducted by Poland’s National Institute of Public Health – National Institute of Hygiene reveals that excess body weight now affects approximately 23.7% of adolescent boys and 22.8% of girls, with long-term epidemiological studies indicating a persistent upward trend in overweight and obesity rates across the Polish population. The diagnosis of this condition relies on advanced methodologies, including computed tomography, bioelectrical impedance analysis, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), and traditional anthropometric assessments, with waist circumference measurement serving as the cornerstone of evaluation. Diagnostic thresholds vary by sex: in men, abdominal obesity is identified at a waist circumference of ≥94 cm (with ≥102 cm indicating second-degree obesity), whereas in women, the cutoffs are ≥80 cm (second-degree: ≥88 cm). Additionally, the waist-to-height ratio (WhtR) should remain below 0.5. Waist circumference is considered a more reliable marker of metabolic risk than BMI, as it remains unaffected by muscle mass, thereby providing a more accurate reflection of health hazards associated with excess visceral fat.
