Understanding the Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a metric used to assess body weight relative to height. Expressed in kilograms per square meter (kg/m²), it quantifies the relationship between an individual's mass and stature. Initially referred to as the Quetelet Index, this measure was developed by a 19th-century researcher who identified the correlation between body weight and human growth. The BMI gained widespread recognition in the 1970s following a multi-country study that utilized it as an indicator of excessive body mass within the studied populations.
