The aversion towards new food items, also known as nutritional neophobia, is the reluctance to eat or avoid food items that are new to an individual. From an evolutionary perspective, it may have been beneficial - allowed you to avoid consuming toxic ingredients, but nowadays it may be associated with a higher risk of nutritional deficiencies and reduced dietary quality.
Food neophobia: developmental patterns, nutritional consequences, and intergenerational transmission
Food neophobia—the persistent reluctance to consume unfamiliar foods—extends beyond its association with nutritional deficiencies or malnutrition to encompass significant social and psychological implications, including the potential restriction of social engagements that involve food sharing. Developmental research indicates that this condition peaks in intensity during early childhood, specifically between the ages of two and four, and is frequently accompanied by a preference for energy-dense, nutrient-poor food choices. Affected children commonly exhibit strong aversions to fruits and vegetables, further compromising dietary adequacy. While the majority of cases resolve spontaneously with age, a subset of individuals retains neophobic tendencies into adulthood, resulting in a sustained reduction in dietary diversity. The nutritional consequences are substantiated by empirical evidence: a 2015 Finnish cohort study (Knaapila et al.) involving 1,178 women and 1,013 men demonstrated that neophobic individuals consumed significantly fewer vegetables and exhibited poorer overall diet quality compared to non-neophobic controls. Furthermore, intergenerational transmission plays a critical role, as maternal neophobia has been shown to predict the onset of the condition in offspring—particularly in seven-year-old girls—through unconscious modeling of eating behaviors (Galloway et al., 2003).
