The medicinal benefits of cinnamon
Cinnamon, long recognized as a natural remedy, has been used to accelerate healing processes. The ancient Romans utilized it to alleviate persistent coughs and other cold symptoms. In traditional Chinese medicine, this spice was recommended for colds, kidney disorders, and inflammatory conditions affecting muscles and menstrual pain. It was believed to have warming properties and to enhance digestion. Even today, cinnamon is a key ingredient in the popular Indian Chai tea, which supports digestive health. Currently, cinnamon is employed as an adjunct treatment for digestive disorders, loss of appetite, diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, reflux, and stomach ulcers. It enhances nutrient absorption by increasing the production of digestive juices. However, it is important to note that cinnamon stimulates bile production, making it unsuitable for individuals with gallstones, liver inflammation, or gallbladder dysfunction. Cinnamon oil, derived from the bark of the cinnamon tree, contains 60–80% cinnamaldehyde, which exhibits antibacterial activity against various pathogens, including Escherichia coli, Streptococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. Due to these properties, it is used to treat respiratory infections, parasitic infestations, and as a component in skincare products. Research also confirms its beneficial effects on blood sugar regulation in type 2 diabetes, improvement of HbA1c levels, and reduction of complication risks. Furthermore, cinnamon may inhibit the growth of certain cancers, such as breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and melanoma. However, it is not recommended for pregnant women or individuals prone to bleeding.
