Key Takeaways
Not all protein-containing nutritional supplements are equal. On the market, there are isolates, concentrates, hydrolisates, casein proteins, and egg proteins, each with different absorption degrees, biological values, and absorption speeds. These characteristics are extremely important for advanced participants in strength training, bodybuilders, and athletes, but also for beginners who are just starting their journey in the world of nutritional supplements.

Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC)

WPC serves as an excellent protein source, being the primary ingredient in most protein supplements (commonly used by athletes) due to its cost-effectiveness, good digestibility, and substantial branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) content. It is a whey concentrate typically obtained through ultrafiltration (UF), a method that separates desired peptides and nutrients from unwanted components. It contains approximately 80 – 86% whey protein, along with minimal lactose and fat residues from mechanical separation. It features long peptide chains. Whey protein is considered one of the most digestible proteins, comparable to egg protein in digestibility, with high biological value and an amino acid profile similar to that of the human body. It usually does not cause digestive issues, is easily absorbed, and provides the desired nutritional and anabolic effects. In concentrate form, its absorption is slightly slower, but it remains one of the most economical options. The price per kilogram of WPC ranges from 50 to 60 euros. It is worth noting the composition of the product, which is often enriched with additional ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, creatine, L-glutamine, or digestive enzymes, affecting its price. Characteristics of WPC: digestion time: 2 – 4 hours; digestibility: good; price: moderate; protein content: 80 – 86%; optimal consumption time: throughout the day or before training.

Whey Protein Isolate (WPI)

Whey Protein Isolate (WPI) is a premium dietary supplement subjected to advanced filtration processes, typically ultrafiltration combined with ion exchange. This results in a product with a significantly higher peptide concentration (over 95%), an enhanced amino acid profile, and reduced levels of unwanted components such as fats and sugars. It boasts superior absorbability, easy digestibility, and a higher biological value compared to concentrates. WPI is highly valued in bodybuilding circles due to its rapid absorption (30-60 minutes). It is recommended for morning consumption and during peritrening periods when the body is most susceptible to catabolism. Unfortunately, the higher quality comes at a significantly higher cost, often exceeding twice the price of WPC. WPI supplements are available starting from 60-80 € for 700 g. Characteristics of WPI: digestion time: 0.5-1 hour, digestibility: very good, price: medium, protein content: approx. 95%, recommended consumption time: morning, before and after training

Hydrolyzed Whey Protein – WPH

Hydrolyzed whey protein, also known as WPH, is a highly processed protein form obtained through hydrolysis, which breaks down long peptide chains into smaller, more digestible fractions. This results in superior quality, high amino acid content, and significantly better digestibility compared to conventional WPC and WPI preparations. WPH is particularly recommended for individuals with digestive issues, those on ketogenic diets, lactose intolerance, or allergies. Despite its high cost, it offers a protein content of up to 100%, making it an ideal dietary supplement during regeneration phases such as mornings or around training sessions. However, due to its rapid absorption, it should not be consumed as a snack during prolonged fasting periods, as it can strongly stimulate digestion. WPH is highly popular among strength athletes due to the need for fast protein delivery to support recovery and athletic goals. Key characteristics of WPH include: digestion time of 0.2–0.5 hours, high digestibility, high price, protein content up to 100%, and optimal consumption times are in the morning, before and after training. The advantages of WPH encompass: superior digestibility, excellent anabolic effect, outstanding solubility, diverse flavor options, ideal protein for fast post-workout and morning recovery, 100% pure protein, and suitability for individuals with allergies and digestive issues.

A protein mixture

There are also protein blends available on the market, which appear to be the most cost-effective and quite appealing option considering the varying absorption rates, diverse peptide fractions, and flexibility in intake timing. The selection of protein depends on individual training and nutritional goals, as well as the financial capabilities of the user, but for beginners and amateur athletes, daily use of WPC preparations is the optimal choice. Additionally, one can purchase WPI and use it solely post-workout for rapid protein delivery to the body. Such a combination provides adequate support for anabolic processes and saves funds for other supplements. Many companies offer these blends, so it is advisable to seek out suitable preparations and select the best one for oneself. Protein supplements are an essential component of an athlete's diet, particularly in power sports and bodybuilding. Understanding the differences between individual protein supplements aids in choosing the right one, tailored to personal preferences, training objectives, and needs, which will ultimately translate into better performance.
