For generations, bacteria were perceived solely as agents of infection and were systematically eradicated through antimicrobial agents and disinfectant formulations. Contemporary research, however, demonstrates that only a minor fraction of these microorganisms exhibit pathogenic properties, while the vast majority perform indispensable roles in sustaining the body’s internal equilibrium. The gut’s microbiological ecosystem—comprising a diverse array of bacterial strains and microscopic fungi—constitutes a veritable "forgotten organ," the full significance of which for human physiology we are only now beginning to comprehend. It is therefore essential to explore the most critical insights into the microbiota in order to better grasp the function of these invisible inhabitants within our digestive tract, as well as their broader impact on overall physical health and mental well-being.
The small intestine is a multifunctional organ
Although most of us think of the small intestine as an organ involved in the digestion and absorption of nutrients after they pass through the stomach, few of us realize that its role in this does not end. In addition to its intra-intestinal function, the small gut is the most important organ of the immune system in the human body. About 80% of all immunoglobulins (proteins secreted during the immune response) are produced in the intestine, and at least 50% of all lymphocytes (composites of the body's immune system) are located in this same organ. Every day, the body is made up of bacteria and bacteria, which are fed to the body, but which are also fed through the microbial cell, which is not only the bacterial barrier, but also the immune cell.
