Common flax – depiction of characteristics
Common flax (lat. Linum usitatissimum) is a plant that has accompanied humans since ancient times. Its Latin name, referring to its valuable usage, clearly indicates its true value. The first areas where flax was used were the Mediterranean and Western Asia, where its fibers originally served as a thread for skin processing. From it, ropes were woven, and later it was also used for the production of fibers. One of the textile works of these ancient cultures was found in the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. Flax was also the source for oil (through the pressing of seeds). This annual plant has a tall stem with a delicate structure, crowned with blue flowers. Flax seeds have a brown-gray color, are small and delicately flattened. After contact with liquid (water), they swell, exuding mucus and forming a specific suspension reminiscent of jelly.
