Understanding intestinal microbiota: Composition, developmental influences, and lifelong adaptive functions
The intestinal microbiota represents a sophisticated ecosystem of microorganisms inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract, with the highest concentration localized in the colon. This microbial consortium is not limited to bacteria—though they predominate numerically—but also includes archaea, yeast fungi, bacteriophages, and protozoan species. Its composition undergoes continuous evolution from birth onward: during vaginal delivery, a newborn’s skin is initially colonized by lactic acid-producing bacteria derived from the maternal vaginal microbiome (e.g., *Lactobacillus* species), whereas infants delivered via cesarean section are first exposed to maternal skin microbiota (such as *Staphylococcus* or *Corynebacterium* genera), a distinction that influences long-term gut microbial diversity. Subsequent transformations occur in tandem with gastrointestinal maturation, dietary diversification, and environmental exposures. While the total microbial cell count remains relatively stable, the proportional representation of specific taxa—including beneficial genera like *Bifidobacterium*, *Lactobacillus*, and *Bacteroides*—fluctuates dynamically in response to nutritional patterns, lifestyle factors, and particularly antibiotic interventions. The latter, though indispensable for treating bacterial infections, can disrupt microbial equilibrium and facilitate the overgrowth of potentially pathogenic strains (e.g., *Clostridioides difficile*). Adherence to prescribed dosages, supplementation with probiotics, and completion of the full treatment course—even after symptom resolution—are therefore critical to mitigate resistance development. It is also important to recognize that the dichotomy of "good" versus "bad" bacteria is an oversimplification: many potentially pathogenic microbes reside harmlessly in the gut, provided their populations are kept in check by dominant commensal species.
