N-acetylglucosamine – a naturally occurring structural amino sugar
Glucosamine constitutes an organic chemical compound categorized as an amino sugar, representing a modified glucose molecule wherein the hydrogen atom of the hydroxyl group (-OH) has been replaced by an amino group (-NH₂). This biochemically active constituent is endogenously present in human connective tissues—most notably in synovial fluid, articular cartilage, and cerebrospinal fluid. Additionally, glucosamine is ubiquitously distributed in the exoskeletons of marine crustaceans, including shrimp (*Penaeus spp.*), crabs (*Cancer pagurus*), and lobsters (*Homarus americanus*), whose shells serve as the primary industrial source for the extraction of this compound in dietary supplement formulations.
