Step 1: assessment of the current state
Vacation brings relief and freedom, also in the kitchen. We often reach for ready-made, processed products, sweets, and forget about vegetables and fruits. If this way of eating lasts for a while, it should not affect our well-being. However, when the holiday rhythm gives way to routine, and the diet after the vacation still reminds of the holiday, the body starts sending out gentle signals. We get a feeling of weight, lack of energy, sometimes it's harder to concentrate.
Second stage: motivation and persistence
Motivation and persistence are the foundations of every change, including that related to healthy eating. It's important to set realistic goals, that is, those that we are really able to achieve. Instead of striving for perfection, it's best to take small steps, such as adding a portion of vegetables to lunch, introducing regular meals or limiting sweets. It's worth mentioning that minor slip-ups are unavoidable and should not diminish motivation - consistency and patience are key. Each day is a new opportunity to get back on track, and individual deviations do not invalidate previous efforts (C. H. Chan et al. 2021).
Step 3: Progressively resuming healthy habits
Hasty and radical changes scarcely ever yield enduring outcomes. After a vacation of liberty, a progressive return to balance is required instead of stringent diets or fasting. Instead of imposing rigid restrictions upon ourselves, we should focus on gradual, body-friendly modifications.
Return to meal rhythm
This is the foundation of healthy eating habits. Consistently consuming meals, for example every 3-4 hours, aids in maintaining stable blood glucose levels, which manifests in improved well-being and higher energy levels throughout the entire day (F. Alkhulaifi, C. Darkoh 2022). Typically, the issue of abruptly appearing hunger pangs that often culminate in reaching for snacks also disappears. Regularity in meals is also a method to limit snacking that arises from boredom, stress, or simply habit. Rather than hastily grabbing for something, it is easier to focus on nutritious, tasty dishes that satisfy for longer.
Selection of products with full nutritional value
In practice, this means including on the menu: vegetables and fruits that are a source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber, whole grain products such as dark bread, cassava, brown rice, or oatmeal, which provide energy for longer and help maintain stable blood glucose levels, proteins of both animal and plant origin (such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes, tofu, tempeh) that support the regeneration and building of muscle tissue, as well as unsaturated fatty acids (such as nuts, seeds, avocados, vegetable oils) that are essential for the proper functioning of the brain, the cardiovascular system, and the absorption of vitamins. It is also important to remember to choose the right proportions when composing meals, so that half the plate consists of vegetables or fruit, a quarter of grain products, and the rest of protein sources, as well as to add a fat supplement, such as a spoonful of oil or a handful of nuts (NCEZ 2021).
Step 4: Ensuring proper fluid intake for the body
Ensuring proper fluid intake for the body is an effective way to improve wellbeing throughout the day - it supports all metabolic processes and organ functioning, and also facilitates the removal of unnecessary metabolic products. Even mild dehydration can manifest in the form of decreased energy, irritability, or problems with concentration. Regular drinking of water is therefore a simple way of improving wellbeing and getting back into shape faster after holiday breaks from the daily routine (M. E. Çıtar Dazıroğlu, N. Acar Tek 2023). It is worth starting with simple habits that easily fit into the daily rhythm: 1. Always keep a glass or bottle of water nearby - this reminds you to drink regularly. 2. Reach for water immediately after waking up - this way, you can hydrate the body well in the morning and start the day off right. 3. Drink water in small sips throughout the day, rather than drinking large amounts at once - the body processes water gradually better. 4. Choose water instead of sweetened drinks - this is the simplest way to avoid an excess of calories and simple carbohydrates. 5. Add lemon slices, cucumber slices or fresh herbs to the water - such a drink is not only healthy, but also more refreshing and attractive.
Step 5: Support through physical activity
Physical activity plays an equally essential role in returning to healthy habits after a period of rest. It is wise to start slowly, avoiding abrupt movements such as intense workouts or stringent plans. The body requires time to adapt. Walking, yoga, cycling, or anything else that brings joy, is an excellent choice. It is fundamental not to view physical activity as a type of punishment. When physical activity brings joy, it is easier to continue. One should not pressure oneself, but rather listen to their body. After vacations, it is a great time to experiment and remember how good it feels to move.
Step 6: Rest and recovery
Upon returning from vacation, one might have the impression that the body has regained strength. However, in reality, after a period of free time, irregular sleep patterns or a change in time zone, the daily rhythm may be disrupted. It is therefore advisable to focus on balance, i.e., maintaining consistent sleep and wake-up times, even on weekends. This aids in stabilizing the internal biological clock and faster restoration of energy. It is also recommended to allocate time for relaxation during the day, for example, in the form of a brief meditation, a tranquil walk, or a soothing bath that supports the regenerative processes in the body and helps cope better with stress.
Does a vacation have to signify a break from healthy habits?
And what if one did not have to return to healthy habits after a vacation? Caring for oneself does not have to disappear just because of a change in environment and daily routine. Of course, vacations are meant for truly resting both physically and mentally. However, it is worth bearing in mind that the more your vacation turns into a time of complete debauchery, the harder it will be to return to your daily routines later on. Spending all day at the beach, overeating, and regularly consuming alcohol in excess can make this difficult, so it is wise to maintain balance and uphold even the smallest elements of a healthy lifestyle during your vacation.
