Common flax – depiction of characteristics

Common flax (lat. Linum usitatissimum) is a plant that has accompanied humans since ancient times. Its Latin name, referring to its valuable usage, clearly indicates its true value. The first areas where flax was used were the Mediterranean and Western Asia, where its fibers originally served as a thread for skin processing. From it, ropes were woven, and later it was also used for the production of fibers. One of the textile works of these ancient cultures was found in the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. Flax was also the source for oil (through the pressing of seeds). This annual plant has a tall stem with a delicate structure, crowned with blue flowers. Flax seeds have a brown-gray color, are small and delicately flattened. After contact with liquid (water), they swell, exuding mucus and forming a specific suspension reminiscent of jelly.

Flaxseed – Nutritional components and properties

The health benefits of flaxseed stem from the numerous nutrients it contains. Flaxseed contains a variety of vitamins, including E, C, and B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9 or folic acid). However, it is important to note that processed flaxseeds may have a lower content. Flaxseed is also a source of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, and zinc. Phosphorus is particularly important, as it is a component of phospholipids, of which lecithin predominates. One of the more valuable components of flaxseed is the omega-3 fatty acid, of which alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is the most important. The composition of flaxseed also includes monounsaturated fatty acids (oleic acid, linoleic acid) and, to a lesser extent, saturated fatty acids (palmitic acid, stearic acid). Flaxseed is also a rich source of protein, which in terms of biological value is comparable to soybean. The limiting amino acid in the seeds is lysine, which can be found in dairy products. Flaxseed also contains a large amount of dietary fiber, which is found in soluble form (pectins, gums, mucilages) and insoluble form (cellulose, lignins). Lignans contained in the seeds have antioxidant properties and may also function as phytoestrogens.

Flax – health and curative attributes

Records from the 6th century B.C. indicate the medicinal use of flax seeds. Doctors in Greece and Rome used them in cases of mucous membrane inflammation, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Slavs used flax to treat ulcers and wounds, primarily through the use of oil. The health attributes of flax seeds are now widely used in many ailments.

Sexual hormones

Due to the presence of lignans, flaxseeds should be included in the diet of individuals with disorders of sexual hormones. These compounds support the regulation of estrogen levels, both in cases of excess and deficiency. They also attract interest in their potential application in the prevention of hormone-dependent cancers such as breast or ovarian cancer. Flaxseeds may also help alleviate symptoms during menopause (e.g., hot flashes) and in the period after it. They are particularly recommended for consumption by individuals who do not tolerate hormonal treatment or cannot undergo it. Lignans replace the effect of estrogens in the calcium-phosphorus economy of the body, especially in terms of their influence on bone mineralization. Therefore, they can be regarded as substances that exhibit a protective effect against the development of osteoporosis after menopause.

The carbohydrate economy

Studies have shown that the intake of flaxseed reduces the risk of developing diabetes and has a positive impact on blood sugar levels in individuals who have previously been diagnosed with the condition. Research has found that as little as 10 grams of ground flaxseed can result in a significant decrease in fasting blood glucose, postprandial blood glucose, and glycated hemoglobin, which is an indicator of the average blood glucose level over the past 3 months.

Support for shedding weight

Due to the significant amount of fiber in flaxseed as a component of a dietary supplement for individuals aiming to shed pounds, it can greatly simplify the struggle against overweight. Fiber results in an increase in the sensation of fullness, thus enabling the curtailment of the desire to eat between meals. Conducted animal studies lead to intriguing observations. They demonstrate that a high level of ALA acid can raise the level of one of the hormones involved in hunger and satiety, namely leptin, which indirectly influences appetite suppression.

Proper intestinal operation and digestive system protection

Thanks to its high fiber content, len promotes appropriate digestive tract functioning. Its water-binding characteristics enlarge the stool volume, enabling len to regulate defecation frequency. It is particularly recommended for individuals with a tendency towards constipation. Its defatted and coarsely ground form can also be administered to people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) experiencing constipation. Due to the substantial amount of mucilages, a blend of flax seeds with water causes their swelling and the formation of a distinctive paste. Mucilages exhibit coating properties, allowing their utilization as a protective agent during antibiotic application and in cases of digestive disorders.

Cancerous diseases

As previously mentioned, the consumption of seeds can reduce the risk of developing cancers that are associated with high levels of sex hormones. Due to its antioxidant content, flaxseed is recommended by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for cancer prevention. However, a beneficial effect can also be observed in people who have already been diagnosed with cancer. In animal studies, the addition of flax oil to the diet has been shown to reduce the growth of cancer tumors. In these studies, appropriate medications were also used, and the addition of flax oil increased the positive effects of treatment. In addition, a decrease in insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) is observed with the use of seeds, which is associated with an increased risk of colorectal and pancreatic cancer. Therefore, the use of seeds in the diet can be seen as an additional protection against these diseases.

Ailments of the circulatory system

It is noteworthy, however, that the fatty acid present in flax seeds is a precursor to other omega-3 fatty acids (EPA - eicosapentaenoic acid and DHA - docosahexaenoic acid), which have numerous advantageous properties. Additional research is still warranted to comprehend the effects of ALA on the human body. To date, it has been observed that its consumption is linked with a decreased risk of first and recurring heart disease. A reduction in the production of cytokines, which are pro-inflammatory molecules associated with several chronic ailments, has been observed. Furthermore, the dietary fiber present in flax seeds also possesses protective attributes. Its soluble fraction binds bile acids, in which cholesterol is present, and impacts their excretion from the body. Studies emphasize the influence of consuming flax seeds on lowering overall cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. Flax seeds also exert a beneficial effect on blood pressure.

Application of flax - particulars

Common flax was primarily utilized in the paper and textile industries up until the 1990s. However, with the advancement of dietetics and the increase in nutritional consciousness, consumers have started to recognize its advantageous properties. The application of flax is primarily dependent on which of its elements will serve as the raw material. Stalks, due to their sturdy and hard structure, are ideal for extracting fibers. Seeds, on the other hand, are used to produce oil that also possesses a yellowish tinge and a mildly bitter flavor. Such oils, obtained through cold pressing, have culinary and medicinal applications. It is worth mentioning the Budwig diet, which primarily relies on flaxseed oil. Apart from the food industry, flax is also utilized as livestock feed. The chemical industry also benefits from its properties. In this case, oil is extracted through hot pressing and is used to produce paints, pigments, adhesives, and other products. In cosmetics, flaxseed oil is a component of lip balms.

Flaxseed – Ways to utilize the seeds

Flaxseed can be consumed raw, mixed with yogurt, or used as an ingredient on a sandwich or salad. A decoction is often made from the seeds by pouring boiling water over them. It is recommended to consume whole seeds, as the fats contained in flaxseed quickly oxidize and lose their nutritional value. In case of using ground seeds, it is recommended to prepare them yourself to minimize the loss of nutrients. Furthermore, flaxseed oil should be used cold, as heat treatment causes loss of some of its nutrients. It can also be mixed with finely chopped onions or crushed garlic. Flaxseed can also serve as an ingredient for salads, raw vegetables, or sauces. However, it is important to consume them in moderation, as flaxseed contains cyanogenic glycosides, which can be harmful in large quantities. Cases of cyanide poisoning due to consuming flaxseed are rare. Flaxseed is a plant with many proven health-promoting properties, and its seeds have been appreciated since ancient times.
