Rose hydrosol

The rose, as a symbol of beauty and natural care, has been used in cosmetics for centuries. Rose water, particularly valued in the Middle East as well as in Bulgaria, Greece, and Rome, is produced through the distillation of petals and serves as a by-product in rose oil production. To obtain just 1 kg of the substance, up to 5 tons of flowers are required! The most commonly used varieties are Rosa Damascena, Rosa Centifolia, and Rosa Gallica. This aromatic liquid is distinguished by an intense, floral fragrance. Today, it is available in stores selling natural products and pharmacies. It is crucial to verify the manufacturer's certificates to ensure the flowers were not chemically treated, which could compromise the product's naturalness and efficacy. Refrigeration is recommended, especially for treating minor injuries or burns.

Rose water – beneficial effects

Due to its content of vitamins A, B, C, and E, as well as bioflavonoids such as quercetin, rose water possesses numerous therapeutic properties. The skin serves as the body's largest organ, acting as a barrier against UV radiation, chemicals, and other physical contaminants. The antioxidants in rose water protect skin cells from damage. Additionally, it exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, helping to alleviate irritation caused by conditions such as eczema or rosacea. It functions as an inhibitor of harmful enzymes like elastase and collagenase, reducing redness and fine lines. Because of its soothing and anti-inflammatory effects, it can be used to treat sore throats. It is also applied to burns, scars, and infections. Thanks to its antiseptic properties and ability to stimulate histamine production by the immune system, rose water is effective in preventing and treating infections while promoting wound healing. Furthermore, it demonstrates antidepressant and anxiolytic effects. It is believed to induce sleep, exhibiting a hypnotic effect similar to diazepam, making it useful in treating depression and improving mood. Its calming action may also aid in managing headaches and migraines. Research indicates that consuming rose water benefits the digestive system by enhancing bile flow, alleviating symptoms such as bloating and stomach discomfort.

Utilization of rose water

Rose water serves exceptionally well as a facial toner, recommended for all skin types. It can also be utilized in skincare products that require water (such as cosmetic clays, masks) to enhance their efficacy. It is equally effective as a hair treatment, smoothing and adding shine. Its application is advised as a hair rinse (after shampooing) or as a mist (spritzing dry or damp hair with rose water from a spray bottle). To relax after a demanding day, it should be added to a prepared bath, while for digestive concerns, its ingestion as an additive to natural water is recommended.

Rosewater for hair care

Using rose-infused water as a hair rinse softens the hair and nourishes the scalp. Additionally, it imparts an intense, signature fragrance to the hair. Crucially, this liquid reduces sebum production, helping to combat greasy hair. Rose water is an excellent ingredient for hair masks and can also be incorporated into various mists and sprays – not only to enhance effectiveness and refresh the hair, but also to give it an exceptional scent.

Rosewater facial toner

Rosewater is highly valued in skincare due to its unique properties. It serves as an excellent facial toner, restoring the skin's natural pH balance. Simply moisten a cloth and gently apply it to the entire face, both morning and evening. This refreshes the skin, and rosewater also has a soothing effect on tired and irritated eyes when used as a compress. Its anti-wrinkle properties are well-known, making it ideal for mature skin. Additionally, it effectively cares for dry, sensitive, oily, and acne-prone skin, including rosacea. It enhances complexion, lightens dark spots, and tightens pores. A key advantage is that it does not leave a greasy residue on the skin, unlike many other products and oils.

Edible rose water

Rose water is utilized in both cosmetics and the food industry. It is an excellent option for individuals with circulatory issues, as it promotes healthy blood circulation and reinforces blood vessel walls. Research confirms its beneficial effects on heart function. Additionally, it exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Notably, it is also recognized as a natural relaxant for stress relief. It is also known to stimulate the nervous and immune systems. Its use is recommended for treating respiratory infections, sore throats, and gum diseases due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.

How to make homemade rose water?

Rose water is produced through the distillation of rose petals with steam. This process is essential to extract rose oil, while rose water is considered a by-product of this method. To ensure we use natural rose water without chemical additives, we can prepare it ourselves. Recipe for natural rose water: Ingredients: distilled water, 2-3 handfuls of fresh rose petals, gauze, string, glass jar. Preparation: Rinse the rose petals thoroughly under cold running water to remove any impurities. Then place them in the gauze or on a clean cloth, form a pouch, secure it with a string, and place it in a clean glass jar. Pour boiling distilled water over the petals (the water should not exceed the level of the petals), seal the jar tightly, and let it steep for 12 hours. After this time, strain and press out the juice from the petals. Transfer to a clean container and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Rose water is particularly valued in skincare due to its properties. However, when purchasing, one should check the ingredients to ensure no artificial additives are present.
