Young children are frequently exposed to accidents, the majority of which are minor in nature and limited to superficial skin injuries such as abrasions or contusions. However, in certain instances, these incidents can take a severe turn, and the child’s subsequent well-being—or even survival—may hinge on whether the caregiver possesses the critical knowledge and competencies in immediate life-saving interventions that can stabilize the young patient’s condition until professional medical assistance arrives.
First aid for children
When a situation calls for an immediate medical response, we should always first assess the situation. If we need to assess the child's immediate condition, if we want to know if it is effective, but if we are conscious, we must make sure that we are safe. When we do a quick analysis of the situation and the place of action, make sure there is no danger to the child or the person nearby. If a medical intervention is necessary, call for help. It is best to shout out loud to someone nearby to help the child. If the patient is aware, however, ask what has happened.
First aid for babies
The most common life-threatening situation for babies is choking. The child begins to cough loudly and forcefully, trying to get rid of the object or substance from the airways. Usually the cough is effective. However, if the baby is unable to swallow the object by himself, the child should be placed on his or her thigh, stomach to leg so that the head hangs above the knee.
