Optimal Hydration Index (OHI)
It is well-known that sugary drinks should ideally be replaced with mineral water. However, what benefits do fruit juices, milk, or coffee offer? Experts have developed an index to help determine the optimal quantities and types of beverages for daily consumption to maximize health benefits. The OHI functions similarly to the existing Healthy Eating Index (HEI). In a publication in the "Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics," researchers confirmed that a higher OHI score is associated with an improved lipid profile in the blood, reducing the risk of hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. When calculating the OHI, a 10-point scale is used, considering the total caloric intake from beverages, daily fluid requirements, and limits for specific categories such as juices, alcohol, or milk. Water, due to its health benefits, receives the highest rating. The ideal OHI is 100 at 2.65 liters of beverages with a caloric content of 196 kcal. It is crucial to recognize that not only diet but also beverage choices impact health. If daily fluid needs cannot be met solely with water, juices can be a suitable alternative. However, before selecting them, it is advisable to understand the difference between juice, nectar, and fruit drink to avoid low-quality products filled with white sugar.
