What constitutes a balanced diet?

An optimal diet for an individual is one that is balanced in terms of nutrient and energy requirements, considering factors such as age, sex, height, physical activity, health status, and other personal characteristics. Based on this information, it is possible to determine the necessary amounts of protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals to meet the body's needs. Such a diet is tailored to the individual, taking into account both internal and external factors affecting metabolism. Therefore, a balanced diet for one person may not be suitable for another. Following someone else's diet can lead to nutrient deficiencies or excesses, negatively impacting health. Each organism requires a personalized approach, considering its specific needs, health status, and dietary habits. Only then can all essential nutrients be adequately supplied. Additionally, physiological states such as pregnancy or breastfeeding require special dietary adjustments. A properly balanced diet reduces the risk of chronic diseases, deficiencies, and excess weight. Balanced nutrition is based on healthy eating principles, following guidelines from the Institute of Food and Nutrition in Warsaw, adapted to individual needs.

Caloric Energy

The body's individual energy requirements vary depending on numerous internal and external factors and may change over time. To determine this need, concepts such as the basal metabolic rate (PPM) and total metabolic rate (CPM) are applied. PPM represents the minimal energy required to sustain essential life functions. This value is influenced by factors including body weight, height, age, physiological state, health condition, and genetic predispositions. PPM can be calculated using the Harris-Benedict formula. For women, it is: PPM = 655.1 + (9.563 × body weight [kg]) + (1.85 × height [cm]) – (4.676 × age). For men: PPM = 66.5 + (13.75 × body weight [kg]) + (5.003 × height [cm]) – (6.775 × age). However, it is important to note that PPM does not account for physical activity. To determine the total energy expenditure, the PAL (Physical Activity Level) factor must be incorporated. Total Metabolic Rate (CPM) = PPM × PAL. The PAL factor allows for precise determination of activity level, which is crucial when designing weight-loss diets. PAL values are: 1.2 – very low activity, 1.4 – low activity (up to 3 workouts per week), 1.6 – moderate activity (4 workouts or physical labor), 1.8 – high activity (physical labor + 4 workouts), 2.0 – professional sports. A balanced diet tailored to individual needs does not necessarily have to be a reduction diet if weight change is not the goal.

It serves as a customized nutritional plan that supports proper development, growth, and optimal bodily function. As previously noted, a diet based on healthy principles should meet specific quality standards. It typically consists of 4-5 meals consumed regularly at set times throughout the day. The foundation includes seasonal fruits and vegetables, particularly those eaten raw to provide the body with essential vitamins and minerals. Regular consumption of whole grains such as cereals, rice, pasta, bread, or fiber-rich flakes is recommended. The diet also includes appropriate amounts of dairy products, fish, seeds, eggs, meat, and plant-based oils. However, it limits the intake of sugar, salt, alcohol, and processed foods, which negatively impact health. Adequate water intake is also crucial and should be tailored individually. The principles of a balanced diet can be adjusted based on health status and personal needs, demonstrating that each diet should be customized to the individual's requirements.

Why a healthy lifestyle is essential for well-being

A healthy lifestyle, encompassing balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and preventive screenings, forms the foundation for good health and longevity. Many modern diseases, including type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertension, cardiovascular conditions, and cancer, are directly linked to unhealthy habits. Furthermore, a healthful lifestyle has a positive impact on mental well-being—it enhances mood, reduces depression risk, and boosts self-esteem. Routine preventive check-ups enable early disease detection, improving treatment outcomes. Experts emphasize that daily choices determine physical and mental health.
