Salvia hispanica seeds: health-related restrictions and potential adverse reactions from consumption

Over the past several years, there has been a marked increase in interest surrounding Salvia hispanica seeds—commonly referred to as chia—which are renowned for their dense nutritional profile and extensive culinary applications. Nevertheless, does their routine incorporation into dietary regimens remain entirely devoid of risk for all consumer demographics, including individuals with pre-existing medical conditions or those undergoing specific pharmacological treatments?

Chia seeds

Spanish sesame, popularly known as chia seeds, has been consumed for a very long time. Its properties were already appreciated by the Aztecs, using it as an energy source and composing a variety of foods with it. However, it was introduced to the European market relatively recently. Chia seeds are a rich source of many nutrients, such as protein, polyunsaturated fatty acids, fiber, mineral ingredients and antioxidants. Particular attention is paid to the presence of alpha-linolenic acid, a blood fraction of the omega-3 family.

Seeds of chia contraindications

Chia seeds can enhance the effects of blood pressure lowerers, anticonvulsants and antiplatelet medicines. Therefore, people taking these medicines should exercise particular caution. Due to their high content of omega-3 fatty acids, chia seeds increase the risk of bleeding. Patients taking antioxidants must take into account this effect of chia seed. The issue of their allergenicity remains unclear.

Seeds of chia side effects

According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), there is no evidence that the consumption of chia seeds can cause side effects. Firstly, insufficient toxicological studies have been conducted. Secondly, this is the result of the observation of reactions after consumption of Chia seeds among countries outside the European Union where they have been used for a considerable length of time (USA, Canada, Latin America). However, as with any newly introduced food, moderation should be maintained. Read more about the dosage here.
