The methods of nourishment for pregnant women are classified as one of the most important environmental factors, responsible for both the proper course of pregnancy and the development of the child during the gestational period. It also affects the health of the child during childhood and even in adult life. It is also significant for the mother's health and her functioning after birth. Therefore, it is especially important for future mothers to pay attention to what is on her plate [1].
Intense food cravings during pregnancy
Intense food cravings, or an uncontrollable urge for specific foods, are a relatively common occurrence among expectant mothers. A study conducted among pregnant women aimed to determine what proportion of them experience such cravings. The findings revealed that nearly half of the participants admitted to consuming additional snacks and that the desire for them was difficult to resist. The most frequently mentioned foods included sweets, pickles, citrus fruits, strawberries, and cherries [2]. Another study yielded similar results. Half of the surveyed women stated that during pregnancy, it is acceptable to indulge in all culinary desires, as it is necessary to „eat for two“ [3]. However, such an attitude can lead to excessive weight gain, which negatively impacts the child’s health. Appropriate weight gain in a woman during the various stages of pregnancy ensures proper fetal development [5], so it is worth considering whether our cravings are merely whims or reflect genuine bodily needs.
Why do pregnant women crave sweets and sour foods?
During pregnancy, many women experience shifts in their taste preferences. They often develop a strong craving for sweet or sour foods. Some even combine both flavors, such as eating pickled cucumbers with chocolate. Hormones are primarily responsible for these changes, which peak in the first trimester. One theory suggests that the body sends these signals to indicate a need for specific nutrients. It is advisable to listen to these cues, but when craving sweets, opting for nutrient-dense alternatives is wise. Excessive "empty calories" do not benefit the baby's health. Instead of candy bars, a serving of fruit or a honey-topped muesli is a healthier choice [6].
The impact of pregnant women's food cravings on the baby's sex
Many people believe that a pregnant woman's dietary preferences can indicate the sex of her baby. According to common beliefs, avoiding meat and having an intense craving for fruit and sweets suggests a girl will be born, while strong salt cravings and increased meat consumption indicate a boy. Do these assumptions have any scientific basis? Research does not support such connections.
