Fungi form an immense domain of organisms found worldwide across different climatic zones. Approximately 1,700 new species are discovered and classified each year. In this article, we present a few of them, with particular emphasis on those that can support our physical well-being.

A mushroom variety recognized as the King oyster mushroom or Christmas mushroom

The King oyster mushroom is a variety of mushroom that contains a multitude of bioactive ingredients. Due to its strong flavor and potential healing properties, this mushroom has gained great popularity. Its large size provides a sense of satiety after consumption. It is cultivated in many countries across Asia and Europe. King oyster mushrooms are used as food products, often as an ingredient in sauces for meat and vegetarian dishes. The flesh is rich in protein, vitamins (B, C, PP), and minerals. Despite the limited number of studies, it is attributed with the following potential properties: strengthening the immune system, antibacterial and antioxidant effects, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects, lowering cholesterol levels in the blood, and potentially anti-cancer properties. In addition, due to the presence of beta-glucans, it is attributed with a role as a probiotic, which can promote the growth of beneficial microorganisms. The effects of consumption can be observed by ingesting the fruiting body or stem of the mushroom. Due to the lack of empirical evidence for the health-promoting effects of King oyster mushrooms, there are no established dosages for humans.

The fungus referred to as Ganoderma lucidum

Ganoderma lucidum is a widely used dietary supplement in Asia. Besides its frequent use in Japan and Korea, it is gaining popularity in the West. Other commonly used names include varnished huba, sparkling lacquer or reishi mushroom. Ganoderma lucidum is helpful in treating various conditions that are associated with metabolism. It is also used for problems of a biological nature, reducing the risk of cancerous metastases, breast cancer, or prostate cancer. In addition, its prophylactic effect against liver inflammation and chronic fatigue is often emphasized. The unkillable fungus contains active substances that improve heart function and reduce its oxygen consumption. It also lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels and has an antihistamine effect. Dosage is closely related to the form of the supplement. When using the basic extract, the dose ranges from 1.44 to 5.2 g. The highest dose is usually used, which is divided into three smaller doses of about 1800 mg each. When using the ethanol extract, the average dose is 6 mg.

Turkey tail mushroom

Turkey tail mushroom is a species of fungus that belongs to the family of Polyporaceae and is widely distributed throughout Poland. It is considered a non-edible species and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for a long time. It is regarded as one of the most sought-after vital fungi due to its effective polysacharide compounds that exhibit antiviral and antifungal properties against various pathogenic agents such as bacteria, eukaryotes, carcinogens, toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus, and hepatitis C. Additionally, it is used in the treatment of liver diseases. Turkey tail mushroom is successfully used in cases of complementary therapy for cancer treatment, strengthening the immune system after chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and for disorders of bowel function. Furthermore, extracts from the mushroom and individual compounds exhibit hepatoprotective, analgesic, and antidiabetic effects. The therapeutic properties of Turkey tail mushroom are attributed to the presence of compounds responsible for its broad range of therapeutic effects, including polysaccharides, protein-polysaccharide complexes, phenolic compounds, fatty acids, and terpenes.

The lion roars fortification

Yamabushitake is a healing fungus species that grows on aging and dead deciduous trees. It has been consumed in China and Japan, where it has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. In other countries it is protected. Medicines made from lion mushrooms have been shown to have a positive effect on the nervous system. By preventing the development of neurodegenerative diseases, it is used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis. Due to its excellent absorption, it is also used as a means of improving digestion and is used to restore energy. Currently, doses based on a single human study are being used. The amount of 96% pure yamabushitake extract used was 1000 mg, taken three times a day.
