How Contemporary Excess of Professional Sports Equipment Restricts Physical Activity in Polish Society: Reflections on the Minimalist Approach of a Polish Mountaineering Legend

In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the tragic passing of Jerzy Kukuczka—a towering figure in Polish mountaineering whose extraordinary feats continue to inspire successive generations of mountain enthusiasts—a vintage photograph resurfaced online, capturing him in a moment of quiet reflection atop a summit, framed by the stark beauty of rugged, rocky terrain. What immediately stands out in this image is the stark minimalism of his gear: rather than a contemporary, multi-compartment backpack equipped with ventilation channels, adjustable ergonomic straps, and an array of pockets, one observes nothing more than a simple rope slung across his shoulders. Absent, too, are the high-performance thermal layers, moisture-wicking base garments, and collapsible trekking poles—items that today’s outdoor aficionados often deem indispensable even for the most modest excursions. This observation prompts a deeper inquiry: has the growing reliance on technologically advanced equipment inadvertently become a deterrent, discouraging consistent engagement in physical activity?
What's more important, goal or sports equipment?
Today, mountaineering and sports equipment is at such a high level of technology that few people start any physical activity without it. Safety, comfort, and fashion make it possible to minimize risk and human determination to achieve their goals. More and more people are paying more attention to the equipment they have and not the goal they set for themselves. I'm not going to write about extreme sports here, but about regular physical activity done on a daily basis. Everyone has their own peak, which at first seems impossible to achieve.
Sports equipment is delaying training
If you've decided to run regularly, why wait until you buy the highest quality shoes, with the latest shock absorbing technology and the latest design... do you really need special leggings and bamboo socks for this form of activity?
Equipment protects and destroys skills
Many times people stop believing in themselves and their own abilities, stop looking for flaws in their own technique, lack of strength or stamina, throwing the blame for their failures on bad sports equipment. Then they decide to buy a new one, with the latest technology, trusting that it will improve their performance. Instead of reducing their limitations, reduce the amount of money in the account. First, set a goal, second, you have to achieve it.
Sports equipment obscures the idea of sports
Sport helps you overcome your limits. Sport is an extraordinary thing. Through it, you break your limits, you force yourself to make an effort that at first seems impossible. It develops muscle strength, determination and self-confidence. Achieving your goal, however, is up to you, and not the company logo printed on a shoe or the color of a blouse.
