An increasing number of individuals are grappling with the issue of overweight and obesity, consequently, there are novel products emerging in the market that claim to aid in eliminating unwanted fat tissue and reclaiming a slender physique. One of these new substances purported to assist in the fight against fat is green coffee. What is it in its composition that possesses such properties? Is it the effect of chlorogenic acid present in green coffee?
Is it truly green coffee? What makes it recommended to choose?
Green coffee is a straightforward term for the raw coffee beans derived from red coffee cherries that have not undergone thermal processing. The processing of these beans was concluded prior to the roasting stage, and they themselves were not fermented. As a result, certain characteristics of coffee were maintained, such as a high polyphenol content, of which 86% is chlorogenic acid. The quantity of this acid significantly decreases during the roasting process, resulting in a decrease in the health benefits attributed to the acid itself. In the United States, green coffee extract has been recognized as a dietary supplement for weight loss, but current research does not confirm this effect 100% without side effects.
Do the components of green coffee truly facilitate weight loss?
As previously stated, the principal component that exhibits a health-promoting effect on the human body and is present in both green and black coffee is chlorogenic acid. It belongs to the polyphenols group. Its primary function is to weaken the absorption of glucose in the digestive tract, thus enhancing insulin sensitivity. Numerous studies conducted on animals confirm this phenomenon. Chlorogenic acid administered in various doses resulted in a lower blood glucose level in the animal model. In their research, Pham N. M. and colleagues propose that the effect of this acid is more apparent in individuals with a higher body weight (BMI above 24.9). Moreover, coffee demonstrates anti-inflammatory properties (reduces interleukin-18 levels) and exerts a positive influence on the cardiovascular system. It is also worth mentioning that an excessively high dose of chlorogenic acid consumed in a short period can lead to an increase in homocysteine levels, hence it is advisable to exercise moderation and not exceed the recommended three cups of coffee per day.
Capsules containing green coffee extract
It is important to remember that consuming coffee or capsules with green coffee extract alone will not be sufficient for weight reduction. Maintaining healthy eating habits and regular physical activity is crucial. In this case, coffee consumption will serve solely as an additional measure for health prevention. If we aim to lose weight or adhere to a healthy diet, we should pay attention to the following recommendations: - consistent approach to meals (the ideal number of meals per day is 4 to 6); - suitable time intervals (meals should be eaten every 3 to 4 hours); - the first meal of the day should be consumed within an hour of waking up, to quickly provide the body with the necessary nutrients; - the last meal should be eaten about 2 to 3 hours before bedtime.
