Some sources also include in this category the so-called 'bulk' supplements, i.e. carbs with a 1:1 (50%/50%) protein content. The possibility of maintaining this ratio allows the maximum use of the protein content for the synthesis of new muscle fibres, which is particularly desirable for strength trainers.

In addition to the main ingredients, such as protein and carbohydrates, gainery can also contain other active substances, the presence of which depends on the manufacturer's guidelines. The most common additives are: fat mixtures e.g. in the form of MCTs, vitamin and mineral complexes, creatine, glutamine, arginine.
