Digital cigarettes have caused a revolutionary change in the market and have quickly gained extraordinary popularity. The users of these devices are steadily increasing, especially among the youth. They are considered to be less harmful than traditional cigarettes, as they produce aerosols instead of smoke. These aerosols are devoid of pollutants and harmful carbon dioxide, but are they actually less dangerous to our health?

Electronic nicotine delivery systems: substantiated cellular and respiratory health hazards

Scientific research has demonstrated that aerosols generated by vaping devices contain highly reactive chemical compounds that induce structural cellular damage, accelerate tissue aging processes, and may initiate mechanisms leading to neoplastic transformation. In light of these findings, the World Health Organization advocates for the implementation of stringent legal restrictions, including prohibitions on the use of these products in public spaces and workplaces, as well as limitations on their advertising and sale to minors. Experiments conducted on rodent models by researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland revealed that free radical molecules present in e-cigarette aerosols inflict significant pulmonary tissue damage, thereby increasing susceptibility to bacterial and viral respiratory infections. The studies employed controlled laboratory conditions, where one group of mice was exposed to e-cigarette aerosol inhalation, while the control group breathed filtered air. Results unequivocally demonstrated heightened inflammatory responses and greater disease incidence in the experimental cohort. Subsequent in vitro analyses focusing on the toxicity assessment of e-liquid formulations indicated that, despite the relatively higher viability of lung epithelial cells compared to exposure to conventional cigarette smoke, oxidative stress levels were elevated fivefold. Disruption of redox homeostasis—often underestimated in the context of daily physiological function—exerts deleterious effects not only on overall health but also on metabolic regulation, including body weight management and the progression of atherosclerotic lesions within blood vessels.

Can electronic cigarettes genuinely assist in smoking cessation – a critical analysis

Electronic nicotine delivery systems are frequently marketed as an effective aid for individuals attempting to cease traditional tobacco use. Manufacturers claim that their products provide nicotine in a controlled manner, purportedly reducing harmful health effects. However, these assertions are profoundly misleading. E-cigarettes lack official recognition as a component of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), which is designed to assist individuals in overcoming addiction. Moreover, the precise chemical composition of the liquids used in these devices remains undisclosed, with manufacturers rigorously safeguarding this information. The subject continues to spark debate within the scientific community, with experts emphasizing the urgent need for further, rigorous research. The only empirically validated method to reduce the risk of chronic respiratory diseases and cancer remains complete abstinence from smoking—whether conventional or electronic.
