Yerba mate is a beverage akin to tea or coffee that is traditionally consumed in Poland but is especially popular in the countries of South America, in the Middle East in Syria and Lebanon. The infusion is prepared from the leaves of the Paraguayan holly and is drunk from vessels made from calabash gourds. The leaves of yerba mate are employed in larger quantities than tea and are frequently infused multiple times with water. This beverage is imbibed through a straw. Yerba mate is a highly valued beverage due to its attributes.

The unique attributes of yerba mate

Yerba mate boasts numerous indispensable attributes. It fortifies the immune system, improves digestive functions, elevates concentration levels. It aids in the body's detoxification process by eliminating harmful substances. Consuming yerba mate combats fatigue, invigorates the mind, aids in weight loss, reduces stress, and promotes sleep. The active constituent present in yerba mate is matein, a variant of caffeine. However, yerba mate's effect is not as abrupt and short-lived as coffee's. Yerba mate results in prolonged stimulation and exhibits stimulating, cleansing, astringent, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties. It is a source of vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, carotenoids, pantothenic acid, and biotin. It also comprises minerals such as magnesium, calcium, iron, sodium, potassium, manganese, silicon, sulphur, and zinc. Other components present in yerba mate include hydrochloric acid, chlorophyll, choline, and inositol.

The impact of yerba mate on the weight reduction process

Yerba mate boasts numerous properties, including antioxidant and anti-cancer properties. It decreases the level of LDL cholesterol and increases the level of the HDL fraction, thereby diminishing the likelihood of atherosclerotic changes in the body and cardiovascular disease. Consuming yerba mate aids in the weight loss process by augmenting satiety and lessening the effect of pancreatic lipase, which breaks down fats - thus assisting in the reduction of fats absorbed by the body. Yerba mate can also be classified among products that exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and anti-parasitic properties.

What is the correct method to brew yerba mate?

Yerba is served in vessels known as mate and guampa. They are made of gourd but can also be ceramic or wooden. The dryer is filled up to 3/4 of the capacity, then the melted leaves and stems are arranged accordingly. The vessel should be positioned so that the dryer forms an incline. The next step is to insert a pipe called a bombilla. Afterwards, the dryer is doused with water of 65 - 80°C temperature, which should not be boiling. The first infusion should be done with an amount of water that the dryer will fully absorb. Then, after waiting for a few minutes, the water can be topped up to the brim. The high quality of the dryer allows for multiple infusions. Yerba mate can be prepared in various ways, including the Argentinian and Uruguayan methods, which differ in the type of vessel and the way the bombilla is placed in the dryer. It is worth considering incorporating yerba mate into your daily diet and using it as a substitute for tea.
