Existence with diabetes
Over 422 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes, and in Poland, the number has already reached nearly 2.7 million, which is why diabetes is referred to as the epidemic of the 21st century [1]. Living with this condition necessitates numerous significant adjustments in daily life, including dietary habits, physical activity, and understanding the disease's specifics, the role of insulin, its administration, carbohydrate counting, and preventing hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic episodes. A diagnosis of a chronic illness like diabetes leads to a decline in quality of life. Despite advancements in treatment methods, such as the use of insulin pumps instead of regular injections, this still requires knowledge and self-discipline from the patient. The diagnosis often triggers negative emotions such as anger, frustration, sadness, or fear. However, some individuals may feel relief that their symptoms have a medical explanation. In both cases, time is needed to learn how to manage the disease and adapt to the new circumstances. Eventually, one can realize that life with diabetes does not have to be worse, but simply different compared to that of healthy individuals.
