What is NEAT all about?
The regular performance of various tasks impacts metabolism and energy expenditure. The difference between the calories we provide and those we expend determines whether we lose weight or gain adipose tissue. The total metabolic rate indicates the energy level to be reached to meet the body's energy requirements. The supply of excess calories contributes to weight gain, while a deficit allows for weight loss. The total metabolic rate (CPM) consists of: - Basal metabolic rate (BMR) - the energy used for fundamental life functions such as breathing, blood circulation, brain function, and maintaining body temperature; - Thermic effect of food (TEF) - the energy required to digest, absorb, and metabolize nutrients; - Exercise activity thermogenesis (EAT) - the energy expended during planned physical activity such as strength training, running, or other forms of exercise; - Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) - thermogenesis resulting from activities not associated with planned exercise. This often underestimated component of total metabolic rate includes all daily activities unrelated to scheduled training, such as walking, standing instead of sitting, fidgeting, shopping, and cleaning. In active individuals or those engaged in physical labor, NEAT can account for up to 50% of daily energy expenditure. NEAT significantly decreases in individuals with sedentary lifestyles or office jobs. These individuals, due to reduced daily activity, may experience greater difficulty maintaining a healthy weight. Moreover, research has shown that prolonged sitting and inactivity significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, it is essential to maintain constant daily activity (U. Ekelund et al., 2019).
