Green tea, globally prized for its distinctive taste and aromatic profile, has emerged as a healthier substitute for traditional black tea. Its abundance of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals positions it as a valuable dietary component. Among the diverse range of green tea varieties, matcha occupies a unique niche—a Japanese product with exceptional properties that set it apart from conventional loose-leaf green teas. What specific characteristics render matcha distinct from other green tea types, and why is it gaining increasing recognition among tea connoisseurs?
Matcha
As already mentioned, matcha is a green tea with a much higher nutritional value compared to the traditional stew we know. Interestingly, both teas are made from the leaves of the same Chinese tea plant (Camellia sinensis). What makes the matcha different is the way they are made. The pre-harvest plantations are specially shaded, so the leaves are characterized by a higher amount of chlorophyll and amino acids. Another difference is the stew method.
Tea matcha has properties
Green tea leaves have a number of health benefits. Of the two main antioxidants that green tea leaves contain, matcha may contain up to three times as many as green tea brewed by the traditional method. Antioxidants protect the cells of the human body by preventing their destruction. They are also known as free-rooters. However, of all the two known antioxidants, the most important is that matcha contains up to 3 times as much epigallocatecin (EGCG), which is an important chemical compound of the body's memory group.
How to match a match?
Traditional matcha is made from sprayed green tea leaves, watered with water at about 70 degrees Celsius. This way the drink gets a unique flavor and, most importantly, retains the greatest amount of nutrients.
Where can I buy a match?
Unfortunately, matches can't be found in the traditional supermarket. The place where we can look for tea is certainly the Oriental food stores. In the purchase we can focus on both the appearance (the more intense, the green cheer, the better) and the price (for 30 g of good quality matches we will pay about... 70 PLN). There is also the possibility to buy in the online store. Using such a source, let's make sure that the store specializes in selling tea, and where it was also produced.
