There is a widespread belief that animal products are essential for athletes' diets. Meat, eggs, dairy, and fish provide crucial nutrients, and their exclusion from the daily meal plan can result in deficiencies that impair endurance and muscle development. However, does the complete avoidance of animal products necessarily lead to a decline in overall physical fitness?

It's a vegetarian diet

There are many variations of vegetarian diets depending on the products eliminated. The most common form is lacto-vegetarianism. People who follow this diet do not eat meat or fish. However, they can consume animal products such as eggs, honey or dairy products. Eliminating meat from the daily menu in no way has to affect our health or overall dietary fitness, provided that we ensure an adequate intake of omega-3 fatty acids and an appropriate dose of iron. This applies primarily to amino acids from animal products, such as egg, honey and dairy.

The abovementioned flaws in plant proteins can significantly hinder the development of a sport in general, and therefore it is of utmost importance that plant products are properly combined so that complementary proteins are obtained from incomplete proteins. It is also worth mentioning that proper processing of both pre-treatment (washing, picking, moistening) and thermal marking (steaming, singing in foil, choking and avoiding an aggressive flavor) can improve the nutrition of plant products.

Unfortunately, vegan diets are often deficient in extremely important vitamins and minerals for the proper functioning of the body. It is worth mentioning that the prolonged deficiency of a given nutrient results in an imbalance of the systemic balance and an irregular course of selected metabolic reactions, which inevitably results in worse sports outcomes.

Vegetarian diet has an effect on athletic performance

It must be acknowledged that the vegan diet is not the best option for people who want to build muscle mass successfully and also successfully develop their physical abilities. In practice, however, this does not mean that achieving high athletic performance is impossible. There are athletes who do not consume animal products but who are successful. Examples include athletes such as Patrik Baboumian, European bodybuilding champion and triathlete Brendan Brazier. In the case of physically active people, eliminating meat from the daily menu does not pose a major problem by covering the demand for all the essential nutrients of the diet, such as dietary supplements, dietary supplementation, and other essential dietary nutrients.
