Type II collagen (CII) makes up a significant portion of human joint cartilage. One of the varieties of this substance is highly widespread and can be procured in the market as shark jelly. Its resilience and tensile resistance result in its occurrence within the anatomical tendons and constitute one of the foundational components that build the skin.

Role and Application

In the human body, it is responsible for ensuring the stability of the internal organs in the correct position and serves as one of the protective factors. It is also important to consider its activity within the immune system – it prevents the development of pathogenic bacteria, cancer cells and toxic compounds. Unfortunately, despite good absorption from the digestive system, it has a low concentration of amino acids and lacks L-cysteine. The primary application of collagen II pertains to pain and inflammatory conditions within the musculoskeletal system, such as chondropathies and joint inflammations, tendons or ligaments. Additionally, collagen II is frequently used for prevention and treatment of conditions such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. It is often used by athletes to prevent injuries and strengthen the musculoskeletal system. Collagen is also used in the cosmetic industry as a component of creams, ointments and anti-aging products, as well as in surgical procedures, such as filling the mouth.

Dietary supplementation with collagen acid

Collagen acid in hydrolyzed form should be taken in a daily dose of about 10 g for skin health and some joint problems. The supplement can be taken before and during meals. However, it is important to note that collagen acid should not be used as a protein substitute, as it is less effective and has a poor amino acid profile. In the case of non-denatured collagen acid used for the treatment of degenerative joint diseases, single doses of up to 40 mg are recommended. This type of supplement can be taken on an empty stomach or during a meal.
