It has been known for years that lack of movement is the main cause of the currently widespread cardiovascular conditions. A lifestyle dominated by sitting, limited free time, and a day filled mostly with work result in heart diseases still leading the list of civilizational diseases and at the same time becoming a serious cause of a significant number of fatal cases both in Poland and worldwide. Are there ways to change our habits and minimize cases of heart conditions? The answer seems obvious, but it is more difficult to put these changes into practice. Physical activity is one of the best solutions to extend the health of our heart.

Cardiovascular exercise regimen

The cardiovascular exercise regimen, as the name implies, is directly related to the heart. People with cardiovascular conditions are advised to focus on endurance sports instead of strength sports. Every gym has a separate area equipped with equipment for cardiovascular training where one can enhance their performance and endurance without risk, gradually improving their health status. Besides the gym and fitness clubs, training to strengthen the heart can also be conducted in other places such as walks in the woods or in the park, swimming or cycling. In recent years, a form of walking known as Nordic walking, i.e., marching with poles, has become extremely popular. This type of training allows for covering long distances without exhaustion. The mentioned physical activity is especially recommended for older people and those who wish to shed excess body fat and cannot engage in strenuous exercises due to overloading their joints.

The effect of physical activity on heart function

The heart is an exceptional tool that incessantly functions... Its primary task is continuous and uninterrupted activity... However, it remains a muscle, and it is widely known that muscles should be exercised... Through physical activity, the heart becomes stronger, larger, and more efficient... It is precisely regular exercise that causes the heart to begin pumping more blood, making it more productive... Athletes at rest usually have a slower pulse, as their hearts work slower but pump more blood... It is evident that such optimal work is more economical... Therefore, we can afford our heart a kind of rest... What happens next? The circulatory system begins to develop... New blood vessels appear, and the blood is much thinner and contains more red blood cells... Its transport is therefore easier, and oxygen reaches all the cells of the body faster and more efficiently.

Physical exercise is the key to bodily wellness

Consistent engagement in physical activity also has a beneficial effect on our overall well-being. We free ourselves of negative emotions while simultaneously relaxing. Physical activity influences the stabilization of blood pressure, lowers blood sugar levels, and increases insulin sensitivity. Physical activity is a natural form of fighting bad cholesterol LDL, and thanks to it, good cholesterol HDL can gain the upper hand. Therefore, we do not need to use chemical means to lower LDL levels. The heart, being a muscle, should be regularly subjected to intense exertion, with the effort continually increased and adapted to the current state of health, particularly in individuals with cardiovascular diseases or a history of heart issues. However, no other factor can replace physical activity, which is crucial for our health.

Physical activity for individuals affected by cardiovascular disorders

Every individual affected by cardiovascular disorders, such as hypertension, lipid economy disorder, or heart failure, should consult their physician, who will provide them with instructions on how to exercise safely. However, if we have never had our blood pressure checked, we do not know if we are suffering from cardiovascular diseases, and in case of any symptoms, deficiencies, or pain, we cannot engage in physical activities without consulting a doctor. Before each workout, it is also advisable to measure blood pressure, and if the pressure reaches a concerning level, we cannot participate in the exercise. A dangerous level is 140/90 mmHg, and the heart rate is 90 beats per minute. Recommended activities for heart patients include walking, Nordic walking, or swimming, Pilates, yoga, marching, aerobic exercises. However, individuals with heart conditions should avoid strenuous physical activities, weightlifting not only in the gym but also in daily activities, at home, or at work. Engaging in sports associated with an increase in adrenaline, known as extreme sports, is also not recommended. It is better to focus on regular, albeit less intense training. The heart, in order to function effectively, needs a lot of movement, so this should be ensured, and thanks to this, it will pump blood effectively every day and supply oxygen to all cells of the body.
