Intake of Vitamin D Doses

The recommended daily intake of vitamin D ranges from 400 to 800 international units (IU), which is too low for adults. In the United States, the upper safe daily dose of sunshine vitamin D is 2,000 IU, and in Canada, 4,000 IU. Scientific research confirms that the maximum safe dose is 10,000 IU. Moderate supplementation with vitamin D in doses between 1,000 and 2,000 IU is sufficient to meet the needs of most individuals. However, the most important contraindication for the intake of vitamin D is overdose. Overdose can lead not only to hypercalcemia but also to conditions such as osteomalacia, osteoporosis, conjunctivitis, inflammatory skin conditions, body deformities, bone diseases, and certain cancers.
