Another critical factor is body dehydration due to reduced vasopressin levels, a hormone responsible for water retention in the kidneys. When levels drop, the kidneys cannot retain normal water amounts, and the excess is redirected to the bladder and expelled, leading to more frequent urination. Contrary to popular belief, the body eliminates water, not alcohol, which is vital for the proper functioning of nearly all physiological processes. Another potential cause is the presence of methanol in alcoholic drinks, which is highly dangerous: it transforms into formic acid, causing metabolic acidosis and accumulating in the most hydrated organs, such as the eye lens or brain, leading to irreversible damage. The last frequently discussed theory involves the presence of higher alcohols in slowly aged spirits, which can induce headaches.

Avoiding a hangover: effective prevention strategies

The most effective approach is to prevent unpleasant symptoms before consuming alcohol and during the event itself. On the day of the celebration, it's crucial to stay properly hydrated by drinking plenty of water, unsweetened lemon tea, or natural juices. The key is to slow down alcohol absorption, as it is faster when the stomach is empty. The best solution is to eat a high-fat meal that regulates metabolism, giving the body more time to neutralize the alcohol. It's advisable to eat during the party if possible. Avoid carbonated drinks, which irritate the digestive tract more when combined with alcohol, and sugary drinks, which further dehydrate the body. Instead, opt for natural juices without preservatives or sugar, which help maintain electrolyte balance. Despite the belief of many people that they sleep deeply after alcohol, this is not true sleep. Alcohol impairs entry into the REM phase, affecting brain regeneration. Therefore, upon waking, one often feels fatigued, has difficulty concentrating, and experiences general weakness. The most common hangover symptom is a headache.

Effective Ways to Combat a Hangover

The human body can metabolize 10–15 ml of ethanol per hour. This means that after consuming 150 ml of vodka, the alcohol content in the blood remains elevated for over eight hours. The rate of alcohol breakdown primarily depends on liver mass. So, what can be done to accelerate this process? If you haven't taken proper care of yourself after a party, there are still other methods. Taking a shower is definitely a good idea, as alcohol metabolites clog skin pores, and a shower helps clear them, improving well-being. Coffee does not speed up sobriety, as it influences metabolism but does not increase the activity of enzymes responsible for alcohol breakdown, such as alcohol dehydrogenase or aldehyde dehydrogenase. Energy drinks should also be avoided, as they contain caffeine, which, like ethanol, can increase heart rate and cause dangerous arrhythmias. Currently available hangover remedies do not contain caffeine. In addition to monosaccharides, they contain components that reduce oxidative stress, such as vitamin C. Physical activity does not directly affect alcohol metabolism, as alcohol is not an energy source for the body. However, many people feel better after light exercise. It should be noted that alcohol impairs motor coordination, situational awareness, and muscle sensation, so any activity should be performed with caution. It is not a good idea to drink small amounts of the alcohol that caused the discomfort, as this only delays the inevitable effects. The best solution is to drink isotonic beverages, which hydrate the body the fastest. However, the taste and smell of these beverages can be unpleasant, so they should be consumed in small portions. A good idea is also to eat fruit in the morning and a light breakfast to avoid further irritating the already exhausted digestive system. Studies show that the positive effects of alcohol only occur in small amounts. The critical amount, above which negative effects predominate, is about 30 ml of pure ethanol, or one small beer (5%) or two shots of vodka. Here are the most important tips: Drink plenty of fluids and eat a meal before the party, drink juice and avoid mixing drinks during the party, drink a glass of juice or eat fruit before bed, and replenish electrolytes in the morning.
