Crackers are brittle, salty snacks that taste superb when combined with nutritious additives... What do you need to understand about their composition and nutritional values?

The composition of crackers

Upon closer examination of the labels of various brands of crackers available on the market, one can find the following ingredients: flour: wheat, corn, soy; yeast; full-cream milk powder; vegetable fats: rapeseed oil, palm oil, coconut oil; leavening agents: ammonium carbonate, sodium carbonate, monosodium phosphate; barley malt extract; glucose; glucose-fructose syrup; corn starch; flavor enhancers: monosodium glutamate; salt; dried eggs; emulsifiers: lecithin, mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids.

Crunchy Snacks - Nutritional Components

Crunchy snacks are an energy-dense snack, as 100 grams (approximately 20 pieces) provides up to 418 kcal. They mainly consist of carbohydrates derived from the flour used for baking them. Most of these carbohydrates are easily digestible. However, the fiber content in this snack is low, as 100 grams of crunchy snacks contain only 2.8 grams of dietary fiber. An individual crunchy snack weighs about 5 grams and its nutritional composition is as follows: - energy value: 20.9 kcal, - protein: 0.5 g, - fat: 0.4 g, including: saturated fatty acids: 0.1 g, monounsaturated fatty acids: 0.1 g, polyunsaturated fatty acids from the omega-6 group: 0.2 g, - total carbohydrates: 3.7 g, - dietary fiber: 0.1 g. Despite the relatively low calorie content in a single crunchy snack, I do not know anyone who would eat just one piece as a snack. Crunchy snacks are usually consumed at parties, events, or during film screenings.

Regulatory constituents present in crackers

Crackers, apart from other components, also contain vitamins and minerals. In 100 g of this product, one can detect: - 0.7 mg of Vitamin B1, - 0.5 mg of Vitamin B2, - 6.4 mg of Vitamin B3, - 0.1 mg of Vitamin B6, - 1 µg of Vitamin A, - 1.1 mg of Vitamin E, - 0.1 mg of copper, - 0.7 mg of zinc, - 5.6 mg of iron, - 19 mg of calcium, - 152 mg of potassium, - 23 mg of magnesium, - 102 mg of phosphorus, - 941 mg of sodium. Of course, the above values may vary depending on the brand. Some crackers available on the market are rich in additives such as emulsifiers, raising agents, and sugar. The nutritional value of these products is significantly lower.

Saltine crackers and hypertension

Saltine crackers are a rich source of sodium - 100 g of the product contains 941 mg of this macronutrient, which satisfies 63% of the daily requirement. Salt is commonly present in food, and its main source in the diet is table salt. Although this element is essential for the body, it is most often consumed in excess. Excess sodium contributes to the development of hypertension. It also increases the risk of stomach cancer and stroke. Currently, it is recommended to consume 5 g of salt daily. This amount includes salt added to meals and naturally occurring in food products. 20 saltine crackers contain 2.4 g of salt, which is half of the recommended value.
