Systemic theories perceive the family as a system of objects that are interdependent and interconnected with each other. A disorder, psychopathology, or problems of one of its members is explained as a disturbance of the balance of the entire system. According to this theory, the problem is not merely a matter of individual management but reflects the dysfunction of the whole system. Moreover, disease symptoms serve to maintain the status quo of the family or are signals that trigger changes in the functioning of the family system. Increasingly, the view of the patient as a victim of the system is being abandoned in favor of a perspective that regards them as part of the so-called problematic system.

The Role of Family in the Formation of Eating Disorders

Józefik's research on the influence of the family environment on the development of eating disorders, particularly anorexia and bulimia, reveals certain recurring patterns. Families of affected individuals are characterized by specific relational dynamics that hinder autonomy, limit the ability to express emotions and needs, create inappropriate relational boundaries, and promote an excessive focus on children's success. In such families, issues related to loss often arise, negatively impacting the child's individuation processes and the establishment of boundaries between family members. Additionally, these families exhibit a strong emphasis on appearance, an exaggerated emphasis on the importance of thinness, and an overly protective atmosphere. Conflicts and communication difficulties often manifest through eating behaviors, primarily through food refusal. Individuals from such families struggle to form social connections, and their partnerships are weak, child-centered, and not focused on mutual partner needs. In these families, women often assume a self-sacrificing role, forgoing their own ambitions for the sake of family success.
