Cephalopods are captivating marine organisms due to their nutritional, commercial, and ecological importance. The largest consumers are the Mediterranean countries and some Asian nations. Squids belong to the mollusks, with approximately 300 species in their family. The most significant squid species in international trade are Loligo duvaucelii, Loligo gahi, Loligo reynaudii, Loligo opalescens, and Loligo vulgaris.

Squids and other aquatic invertebrates

Squids, also known as squid or squid-like species, are characterized by a round body shape with 10 limbs, as the name suggests, which is a decapod body. The body is covered with a chitinous "shell".

Attributes of Squids

Diets that are abundant in seafood can provide a wide array of health benefits, as these organisms contain nutritious nutrients, minerals, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin E. Regrettably, mollusks, which are also deemed seafood, are vulnerable to contamination by toxic heavy metals present in water, leading to accumulation due to their limited ability to metabolize these substances.

Expenses for Squids

Squids, which are a type of seafood, are not widely available in Poland in fresh form. However, they can be found in some stores, both fresh and frozen. The price of frozen squid ranges between 40 and 50 PLN per kilogram, but in the case of fresh squid, prices can be slightly higher due to the demands for transportation and storage. However, in fresh form, it is easier to recreate their original flavor during culinary preparation.

How to properly prepare squid?

Considering that squid is an exotic product, as in the Polish climate, their preparation requires some experience and culinary skills. Fresh squid should be cleaned from the membranes and intestines, then briefly cooked on low heat or boiled for a short time to maintain their tenderness. Frozen squids, on the other hand, should be defrosted in cold water, then cleaned and cut into circles, and subsequently coated in flour with salt and pepper, before being fried in hot oil for a short duration. Squid prepared in various ways can be added to soups, salads, and other dishes. Certainly, it is worth experiencing the taste of squid when the opportunity arises. Fresh squid, prepared in the regions of their origin, such as the Mediterranean or some Asian regions, are undoubtedly the most delicious, thus these places can be an ideal destination for culinary travels. These limbs have a beneficial nutritional profile, and since they are typically consumed infrequently, the risk of heavy metal poisoning is very low.
