Soybeans in a man's diet... reality and beliefs

Soybeans are one of the products that men rarely choose due to their phytoestrogen content and the alleged harmful effects on men's hormonal balance... Are these beliefs supported by evidence?

Soy and men’s health: separating fact from fiction regarding phytoestrogen effects on the body

Soy isoflavones, commonly referred to as phytoestrogens due to their structural resemblance to estrogen—the primary female sex hormone—have long been a subject of concern, particularly among men. These apprehensions stem from the potential risks of endocrine disruption, including reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, and the development of gynecomastia, a condition characterized by the enlargement of male breast tissue. However, while these theoretical risks exist, their manifestation in practice is contingent upon extraordinarily high levels of consumption. Research indicates that adverse effects were observed only in individuals ingesting as much as 360 milligrams of isoflavones daily—a threshold that is virtually unattainable within the context of a standard European diet. With moderate intake, such as a single glass of soy milk or a serving of tofu per day, the likelihood of experiencing negative consequences remains negligible. Rather than avoiding soy out of fear, it is worth acknowledging its substantial nutritional benefits: a rich profile of complete plant-based protein, unsaturated fatty acids, B-complex vitamins, and essential minerals like magnesium and iron. Consequently, incorporating soy-based products into one’s daily diet may offer men more health advantages than potential drawbacks.
