The SCD (Specific Carbohydrate Diet) is a dietary approach for individuals with ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, celiac disease, and cystic fibrosis. What foods are recommended in daily meals following this diet, and what are the reviews about it?
The SCD diet
The SCD diet was developed by American pediatrician Dr. Sidney Haas in the 1920s as a cure for celiac disease. Dr. Hass's work was continued by Elaine Gottschall, the mother of a girl with inflammatory bowel disease. Little Judy was a doctor's patient. Her condition improved after following the SCD Diet. Elaine Gottshall described the diet very closely in her book Breaking the Vicious Cycle.
The SCD diet is in stages
The SCD diet is an individual way of eating, its rules change depending on the diseases, allergies and food intolerances that occur together and the individual tolerance of the products. The diet is carried out in stages, starting with the initial intro stage, and then when the body tolerates the products consumed, it moves to the next stage. There are a total of 6 stages of the SCD Diet, and the pace of change is slow if the gut is very damaged, or relatively fast, but only if the body is able to regenerate quickly.
The SCD diet is a diet
The choice of foods that are allowed on the SCD diet is based on the chemical structure of the foodstuffs. The main premise of the carbohydrate-specific diet is to eliminate the carbs composed of sucrose, lactose or starch. Carbohydrates composed, i.e. polysaccharides (chain particles) and disaccharide (dual molecules) are unprocessed. Complex carbs, which are difficult to digest, feed on harmful bacteria in our meals, causing their fermentation.
The SCD diet the prescriptions
Recipes for rice from cauliflower or broccoli Ingredients: raw raw coconut vegetables cut into raisins. Then, using a hand crust or blender, we crush them until the desired consistency is achieved. Rice prepared in this way forms the basis, e.g. for soup or as a substitute for potatoes.
The SCD diet opinions
The SCD diet requires the support of a multidisciplinary team. In order to achieve the best results from the diet, it is advisable to consult a gastroenterologist and a dietitian before using it. According to studies, the SCD Diet improves clinical and laboratory parameters in children with Crohn's disease and inflammatory bowel disease [2]. The diet may also show positive effects in people with autism, bowel syndrome, intestinal microflora excess, inflammation of the intestines, as well as cystic fibrosis and mucosal addiction.
