Saffron can contribute to enhancing the process of yellow spot degeneration!

Certain individuals, particularly elderly, complain about worsening vision caused by yellow spot degeneration. In such instances, valuable spices, such as saffron, can prove to be beneficial.

The beneficial impact of saffron on ocular health and visual acuity

A multitude of factors can influence the quality of our vision, yet as we age, an inevitable physiological decline in visual function occurs. Consequently, the reliance on corrective eyewear becomes more frequent, and susceptibility to various ocular diseases increases. To mitigate the risk of developing such conditions or to decelerate their progression, it is imperative to adopt a preventive approach through a balanced diet rich in bioactive compounds that support optimal eye function. One of the most severe age-related conditions affecting older adults is age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which leads to a gradual loss of central vision and reduced visual acuity, significantly impairing daily functioning. Clinical trials conducted in Australia on a cohort of 25 patients diagnosed with AMD demonstrated that consistent supplementation with saffron extract over a six-month period yielded measurable improvements in 23 participants. These promising findings suggest the potential future development of innovative therapies based on this natural compound. Presently, however, we can already take preventive measures by incorporating compounds such as zeaxanthin and lutein—carotenoids with well-documented protective effects on the retina—that help maintain visual performance even in advanced age.
