Dietary supplements that contain ginseng extract are primarily recognized as a strengthening and adaptogenic agent, meaning they are often suggested for individuals who face daily stress as well as those who are subjected to high physical demands and intense exercise. Unfortunately, there is limited information regarding the benefits of ingesting ginseng extract, hence in this article, I have undertaken to present the reasons why it is worth considering supplementation with this discussed extract.
Ginseng's Radix
Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) is a small perennial plant belonging to the Araliaceae family, predominantly found in East Asia, Siberia, and North America. This valuable plant has a long history in medicine and demonstrates a multifaceted, beneficial effect on the human body. In both traditional Eastern medicine and modern therapies, ginseng is used as an effective adaptogen, immune booster, antioxidant, and performance enhancer. Additionally, ginseng is esteemed as a potent aphrodisiac.
Characteristics and effects of ginseng
The primary bioactive compounds in ginseng are triterpene saponins, known as ginsenosides, but the plant also contains numerous other bioactive substances such as polyacetylenes, phytosterols, essential oils, vitamins, flavonoids, nitrogen compounds, and peptidoglycans. Ginseng extract is the subject of ongoing research, and its application demonstrates promising benefits. It enhances sexual function, boosts stress resistance, exhibits antioxidant effects, regulates blood glucose levels, and may possess anticancer properties. However, many studies have been conducted on animals, and clinical trials require further confirmation.
Ginseng's role in exercise performance
Ginseng ranks among the most widely used herbal supplements globally. Beyond its common application in treating and preventing various health conditions, it is increasingly employed to enhance physical endurance. Athletes have long leveraged its ergogenic properties, yet due to significant methodological flaws in numerous studies, there remains a lack of definitive evidence that ginseng extract supplementation can genuinely affect exercise metrics. Consequently, additional, rigorously conducted research in this area is essential.
Ginseng pill cost analysis
The price of ginseng supplements ranges from PLN 20 to PLN 50, depending on the concentration of root extract in the product, as well as the quantity and the manufacturer. These supplements can be purchased online or in physical stores such as pharmacies, health food shops, or nutrition stores. Based on available data, it can be concluded that the use of ginseng supplements may have beneficial effects on health, and regular intake may enhance resistance to both mental and physical stress. Due to promising research findings, ginseng remains a key focus of scientific research.
