Extended chewing duration aids in portion control

Dutch researchers conducted a study to examine how chewing duration affects food intake. Participants were instructed to chew their bites for either 1 minute or 8 minutes during a meal. Simultaneously, varying amounts of food were introduced into their stomachs via a tube. After 30 minutes, they were given a meal to consume as desired. It was found that the amount of food consumed in the subsequent meal depended on chewing duration. Those who chewed longer consumed smaller portions.
