Nutrition specialists consistently highlight that marine-derived products, including both fish and shellfish, play an indispensable role in balanced dietary patterns due to their rich content of polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids, bioavailable vitamin D3, the trace element selenium, and protein of exceptional biological value. Nevertheless, not all fish-based processed foods meet these nutritional benchmarks uniformly. This raises an important question: how do so-called "crab fingers"—a widely consumed food product designed to mimic crab meat texture—fare in terms of nutritional composition, and does their regular consumption offer health benefits comparable to those derived from natural seafood?

Crab thumbs are often recommended as a supplement to salads, sushi or snacks due to their specific, desirable flavor and aroma. They can be purchased in any store in the ice cream department or among products stored in refrigerators. Popular in Poland the product has a characteristic appearance are long, oval, distinctly white thumb wrapped in several pieces. The history of the production of sushi dates back to the 1970s, when the Japanese company Sugiyo Co. produced and patented an imitation of the meat from the Japanese market under the name Kanikama. Although the name of the product suggests that it contains crab meat, it is useless to look for it there. The main ingredient of crab beans is mint from the North Pacific, but its quantity is not very large because it only makes up 30% to 40% of the ingredient. The rest is supplemented by fillers, i.e. eggs, wheat, flavourings, sodium glutamines or flavours. The name surimi indicates that this type of meat contains minced meat, which, depending on its intended use, can also be found in the form of sea crab.

Crab thumbs are the price

The cost of packaging crab sticks in the most popular grocery stores is around PLN 44,5 for 250 g. This price depends on promotion or sale and is usually not higher than PLN 15 per kilogram of product. It should therefore be emphasized that the cost of buying crabsticks alone is not high and suggests a lower quality and composition of the product, since the kilogram of crab meat is valued at around PLN 70.. However, it can be said that crab steaks are a cheaper alternative to golden seafood, their quality and nutritional value also decrease in proportion to their price.

Recipe for crab thumb salad The ingredients are: pack a sauce of crab claws, 1 national celery, 1 bunch of your petrusks, 1 teaspoon of garlic, 1 2 tablespoons of natural yogurt, salt and pepper to taste. Preparation: pack crab cloves and cut the meat into patches. Same goes for pasta with salted celery.
