Plants for Kidneys... Dissolving Kidney Stones Using Plants

Our pastures, fields, and underbrush are home to diverse plant species whose resources are employed in treating urinary system problems. Some of them exhibit a diuretic effect, facilitating the elimination of toxic metabolic products from the body, while others cleanse the urinary tract. The slightly diminished action of natural remedies permits their longer application (with certain limitations) compared to synthetic drugs.

Plants supporting kidney function

The abundance of active compounds in plant-derived raw materials (Table 1) facilitates their use as adjunctive therapies for urinary tract disorders. In this context, herbs with diuretic and antibacterial properties are employed, necessitating prolonged treatment with these materials and the supplementation of certain vitamins and minerals. Among the numerous medicinal plants, it is noteworthy to mention sweet woodruff (Asperula odorata), cleavers (Galium aparine), heather (Erica), and corn fibers (Zea mays). Despite being commonly regarded as a bothersome weed, nettle (Urtica) has long been utilized for its medicinal properties. For therapeutic purposes, nettle leaves and herb are used, available as medications, dietary supplements, or fresh leaves. The plant exhibits diuretic, detoxifying, and body-strengthening effects. Additional support for the urinary system comes from corn fibers, which, due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-lithogenic, and relaxing properties, prevent kidney stone formation. Horsetail (Equisetum), rich in flavonoids, potassium, and silicon salts, is used in the treatment of urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and mild inflammations. However, it is important to note that the thiaminase enzyme present in horsetail accumulates in the blood, leading to vitamin B1 deficiency. Therefore, it is advisable to enrich the diet with vitamin B1-rich products during horsetail treatment. Other diuretic herbs include birch buds and birch leaves, which have diuretic, strengthening, and kidney and bladder stone-preventing effects.

Dissolving kidney stones through herbal remedies

A severe, sudden pain in the lower back that radiates to the groin, genital organs, and inner thighs is a hallmark symptom of kidney stones, one of the most prevalent urinary system disorders. Historically, alongside pharmaceutical medications, herbal remedies have played a significant role in managing this condition. In his herbal medicine textbook [2], Father Klimuszko emphasizes that "kidney stones are far easier to dissolve and expel from the body than gallstones." Additionally, he outlines various methods for utilizing herbal blends in the treatment of kidney stones.
