Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is the most well-known antioxidant and plays a crucial role in the body, exhibiting anti-inflammatory, antiplatelet, antibacterial, anticancer, and immune-boosting effects. To retain the maximum amount of this valuable vitamin, it is important to remember not to peel citrus fruits too thoroughly, as the white skin layers improve the bioavailability of vitamin C.

Lemon: Characteristics and Benefits

Everyone is aware of the appearance of a lemon. It is a yellow, round fruit with a high content of vitamin C, approximately 40-60 mg/100 g. It is a source of beta-carotene, B-vitamins, vitamin E, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and iron. The fruit and lemon juice have a strong antioxidant effect. Therefore, it is advisable to pay attention to the intake of lemons in our diet, for example, in the form of a glass of water with freshly squeezed juice from half a lemon. Such a mixture can be an ideal energy boost for the start of the day. Limonka, also known as lime, belongs to the citrus family. It is mainly used to refresh drinks, but also as an addition to salads or desserts. Its composition and health properties are similar to those of lemons.

This fruit may not be the most popular due to its bitter taste, but it is still worth incorporating into your diet due to its numerous health benefits. Grapefruits are a source of vitamin C and beta-carotene, which strengthen the immune system and reduce inflammation in the body. They lower cholesterol levels and regulate blood pressure, which is very good for the heart. Grapefruit is also low in calories. The red and pink varieties contain the most vitamin C. Grapefruit also provides a lot of potassium, fiber, and vitamins from the B group. It also has a low glycemic index (20), so it can be consumed by people with diabetes without fear of a sudden spike in blood sugar levels.

Giant fruits from the citrus family, also known as pomelo

Also known as the 'giant orange', this fruit is so named due to its enormous size, as it is the largest member of the citrus family. It resembles a grapefruit in appearance, but its fruit is sweeter, although less aromatic and juicy than a grapefruit. Pomelo contains substantial amounts of vitamin C (61 mg/100 g) that strengthens our immune systems. The potassium content in pomelo also helps regulate blood pressure and heart function. Pomelo also contains bioflavonoids, which are antioxidants that inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Due to its alkaline properties, pomelo is also recommended for people suffering from reflux and heartburn. The glycemic index of pomelo is 30, so it can also be consumed by people with diabetes.
