During the examination of exercise supplements, one may encounter a compound known as johimbine, particularly in pre-workout products or fat-reducing agents. Is it harmless? What are the effects concealed behind this enigmatic name? In this article, we attempt to provide answers to these questions and also consider what supplementation with this compound should look like.

Johimbin – Characteristics and Functioning

Known by the name johimbin, this is an alkaloid derived from the bark of the African tree (medical johimbine) and Asian snakebite shrubs. Due to its powerful stimulating effect, it is regarded by folk medicine as an aphrodisiac used to stimulate libido. Its primary functions include increasing the concentration of adrenaline in the body and stimulating fat metabolism to thermogenic processes. Research supports its significant effectiveness in weight reduction. In the case of men, it is used to reduce abdominal fat, while in women, it is primarily used in the gluteal and thigh areas. Among other applications of johimbin in medicine, there is also the treatment of depression and impotence in men.

What is the correct way to use johimbine?

The best effectiveness of using johimbine is achieved when it is taken on an empty stomach, as its effect is inhibited by food. Scientific research confirms that a dosage of 0,2 mg per 1 kg of body weight had beneficial effects on the fight against excess fat tissue. At the same time, it has not been shown that the mentioned dosage causes significant changes in the parameters of the circulatory system such as blood pressure or heart rate. Currently, the following dosages are taken as a supplement: 14 mg per 70 kg of body weight, 18 mg per 90 kg of body mass, and 22 mg per 110 kg of weight. However, it is strongly recommended to avoid using johimbine, as it is banned in Poland and products containing yohimbine are not approved for sale. The use of this substance may lead to undesirable side effects such as anxiety, hallucinations, tremors, and muscle stiffness. People with heart diseases, thyroid disorders, or hypertension should refrain from using this substance.

Potential perils and adverse effects of johimbine supplementation

The utilization of johimbine carries substantial risks and may lead to a series of disconcerting and dangerous complications and side effects.
