Companies are heavily promoting this type of drink as indispensable for any form of physical activity. Are these beverages truly irreplaceable or is it perhaps better to stick with good old water?
Iso-osmotic drink - in a nutshell
An iso-osmotic drink is characterized by the same osmolality as the body's systemic fluids, allowing for its highest absorption. It consists of vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates. Each 100 ml of this drink should contain 6 grams of carbohydrates, which are necessary to replenish the energy level. Furthermore, an iso-osmotic drink should contain sodium for maintaining the electrolyte balance and calcium and magnesium for maintaining proper nerve impulse conduction in the muscles. A deficiency of these components, including potassium, can lead to muscle cramps.
When is the appropriate time to consume isotonic beverages?
They are primarily intended for individuals who engage in intense exercise for a period exceeding one hour. It is not beneficial to consume this type of beverage if our workout lasts 30-40 minutes. Carbohydrate, vitamin, and mineral losses will not be substantial enough for us to have to replenish them during a training session. Consequently, individuals who drink this kind of fluid at gyms introduce only additional calories to the body that need to be burned off so they do not deposit as fat tissue. Isotonic drinks are employed, among other things, during marathons because endurance sports cannot do without them. This occurs because they are the quickest methods to replenish lost electrolytes and carbohydrates, which in turn rapidly provide energy. These beverages do not burden the stomach while running, which is of utmost importance for professionals.
Recipes for homemade isotonic beverages
Why buy popular isotonic drinks from brands when you can make your own tasty and healthy isotonic beverage at home? Here are some recipes that I've found and tested. Basic ingredients: 1 liter of mineral water; 3 tablespoons of acacia honey; 1/3 teaspoon of Himalayan salt. Flavoring ingredients: 1/2 lemon juice; 1/2 lime juice; lemon and lime juice; orange juice; mint leaves. The main ingredient is, of course, mineral water, which makes up the majority of our bodies. During physical exertion, we lose a lot of water. Himalayan salt is responsible for replenishing the electrolyte level. Why this particular salt? Because Himalayan salt is one of the best types of salt. Acacia honey is an excellent source of simple carbohydrates. The other ingredients are primarily responsible for flavor and providing vitamins. Which drink we prepare is solely based on our preferences. For example, we can also use pureed strawberries, kiwi, or watermelon. On hot days, we can use these drinks for cooling down. It's worth adding a few ice cubes then. However, remember that these are additional calories that need to be included in the calorie count.
