Is Coffee Consumption during Pregnancy Truly Harmful?

Despite the absence of definitive regulations regarding caffeine consumption by pregnant women in Poland, daily limitations on its intake appear in manuals and dietary recommendations. Investigations suggest that the risk of miscarriage escalates when coffee and caffeine are consumed during pregnancy.

Repercussions of consuming coffee during pregnancy

The negative consequences of consuming coffee during pregnancy arise from the fact that during this period, the metabolism of caffeine occurs differently than in women who are not pregnant. The metabolism of caffeine takes place in the liver with the help of enzymes that work differently and less efficiently in pregnant women. As a result, the time of caffeine metabolism is extended, which leads to its accumulation at high consumption and longer removal from the body. Already at 7-8 weeks of pregnancy, caffeine metabolizes so freely through the liver that the level of this substance is equal in the mother and child. The fetus in the uterus is also unable to effectively metabolize caffeine due to its undeveloped liver functions. Studies show that the birth weights of babies of mothers who consume more than 200 mg of caffeine are lower than those of babies of mothers who consume less coffee. In addition, there are reports of an increased risk of miscarriage due to high daily doses of caffeine, although these are not unequivocal. For this reason, it is recommended not to exceed the daily dose of 200 mg of caffeine during pregnancy.

Grain beverage during gestation

Grain beverage constitutes an excellent alternative to natural coffee beverage. It contains no caffeine, but as a product of roasting diverse cereal varieties with the addition of chicory, it is a source of health-promoting constituents. These are polyphenols and phytic acid, which possess the ability to bind reactive elements (antioxidants).

Stimulant-devoid coffee during pregnancy

It is fabricated by chemically eliminating stimulants from the seeds... its flavor varies slightly from the taste of natural coffee... a cup of 220 ml holds around 5 mg of stimulants.

Unroasted coffee during pregnancy

Unroasted coffee is a type of coffee whose beans are not subjected to the roasting process. The difference in caffeine content is small between unroasted and regular coffee. Therefore, consumption of unroasted coffee should also be limited during pregnancy. However, the roasting process deprives coffee beans of some valuable components, such as chlorogenic acid. This unusual substance provides benefits to the body on many levels: it stabilizes blood sugar, lowers blood pressure, and prevents the accumulation of body fat. However, due to the lack of evidence of its safety, it is not recommended to consume unroasted coffee during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What beverages can replace coffee during pregnancy?

Coffee is an excellent way to illuminate the mind and conquer fatigue. However, if we want to take care of the health of our future offspring, we should consider limiting caffeine intake during pregnancy. If we cannot give up on it, we should stick to the maximum daily dose of 200 mg of caffeine. It is worth remembering that the amount of caffeine in coffee depends on the brewing method. If we want to avoid caffeine completely, we can choose grain coffee or decaffeinated coffee. We must also remember that caffeine is also present in chocolate, energy drinks and carbonated drinks.
